Be The Change: How Ulanda Terry"All Things Posh" Business Woman Began Her Journey

What is your background? Education & Work Experiences
I attended high school at Pine Bluff High School. Received my B.S. from UAPB in Agriculture Business with a focus on Marketing and M.S. from University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in Agriculture Economics. I spent about 12 years in Corporate America working a variety of roles in the Human Resources area for 2 Fortune 100 Companies. When I left Corporate America I was responsible for some of a major Food Company’s Diversity & Inclusion efforts, training and talent development.

What’s your favorite quotes!
"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity.... It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events”. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow. Melodie Beattie
What ignited the spark in you to starting your own business venture or to make significant changes in an existing business?

I started a business for many reasons.

1.) I believed that I wasn’t using my full capacity in Corporate America. African American women are the fastest growing demographic of entrepreneurs. Many times we are overlooked because our leadership style and business approach may seem unconventional.
We tend to lead with the heart & gut because we are very intuitive beings.
2.)I wanted to leave a legacy for my children.
3.)I wanted to fulfill my dream and passion of being a creative in the Events and Design industry.
If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?
I would not do a whole lot differently. I grew up in my twenties and early thirties in Corporate America. I believe those years helped me gain a true sense of how a Fortune 500 Company runs. It also helped me build meaningful relationships and taught me the importance of focusing on people and not just the bottom line.
What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
I have had many failures...primarily around strategic planning, being afraid to ask for help, and not intentionally working on important relationships. I tend to be a doer so a lot of my focus tends to be on the what and the how is just as important. I am still learning the importance of planning ahead. It’s critical in a small business where one can wear many hats.
Growing up in a single parent home taught me resourcefulness. If it was something we needed or couldn’t do, we had to figure it out before we couldn’t afford to pay anyone for help. It’s so many resources out there for entrepreneurs now, so I’m learning to use them!! And not be afraid to ask for help. Sometimes I’ve been so focused on work that I have forgotten to take time for myself and others. Being an entrepreneur has actually allowed me to manage that better.

How long do you stick with an idea before giving up?
I rarely give up. If it’s something I feel strongly about and trust it’s apart of God’s plan for me, I try hard to stick out. With that being said, I never want to sacrifice my health, my family or relationships.
My greatest fear is not being able to contribute or provide for my family.
Another fear of mine is contributing to a childhood that my kids have to recover. I want to give them a good quality of life while helping them grow strong, kind to others, confident in who they are, and to be contributing citizens and have a love and belief in Jesus Christ.
I manage fear by having faith and trusting God’s plan for my life...knowing either I lose or I learn.
If you could talk to three people, who would they be and why?
Oprah- I admire her business sense, personality and resilience.

Tupac - I love to write and recite spoken word myself and admire his lyrics and mindset about our culture.
Princess Diana - I’ve always admired her heart and love for people. She was a beauty icon but never forgot about what’s most important.

Who has been your greatest inspiration?
My greatest inspiration has been my grandmother. She is a giver. Her patience, kindness and encouragement have helped many people be better.
What book has inspired you the most? (OR what is your favorite book?
John Maxwell is my favorite author. His principles around leadership and taking care of people help me assess my leadership style and learn ways of doing things better.
What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?
My favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur is the rush and excitement of seeing my ideas and services meeting a need. I like being my own boss too which can be a blessing & curse if not managed well. I like that I am my own boss. When I plan smart and work hard, the results I want to see are there.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Everyday I’m able to pick my kids up for school is satisfying for me. When I worked in Corporate America they had to attend after school programs through the Boys & Girls Club to whom I’m very grateful. But any extra time I get with them I cherish because they are growing fast.
 Pay it Forward!
My mindset around risk and being an entrepreneur was shaped by several mentors that stressed the importance of not being afraid to step out in your purpose and pursue your dreams. I hope to be that type of mentor for others. I want to be known as someone who empowers others to pursue their passion as well.

Another Year, Another Chapter, Goodbyes Are Not Always Pleasure, But Necessary!

As I prepare myself to say goodbye to 2017, another chapter in my life to close and send off with some tears a huge wave of goodbyes. One thing I have come to realize that there are countless different types of characters that will come into our lives. There will be times the main character, the villain, the stand by or supporting characters will play a significant role in your life only to stay or move on into the sea of the unknown.

Evolving means to embrace everything that has happened and focused on learning to let go of what didn’t happen. A moment of silence for the pain we endure, the struggles we endure, the sorrow and loss of loved ones, the sad and happy moments we endure while trying balance life and unhealthy relationships we encounter in 2017.

Give thanks and breathe again and praise the most High YAH for grace and mercy!
Everything has its seasons and everything has its cycles. Allow 2017 to pass knowing that it doesn’t define you or me, it was  only a chapter in your (my) book. Remember this year doesn’t set the tone for other years it’s just another chapter, among the thousands of pages in your book.
2018 will set the new shift, for healing, self love, balance, wisdom and over- standing for new chapters to be written, with a fresh introduction. The turning point is as 2017 exchange many want be able to walk with you into your next chapter and that’s truly okay they had there reason, seasons, time and space.
I declare new levels of growth in my life to work on myself and learn how to be the master of my ship.
Goodbyes are not always pleasure, but necessary! I accept it as a sign of 2nd chances

Major Love,

How do you achieve work-life balance?
When I was working in corporate, work-life balance was a huge challenge for me. I was so focused on being the best at my job and going above and beyond that I discovered that I wasn’t being my best at home. There were times when I could recall going into work in darkness and leaving in darkness. I was working hard, but not really working smart. When I made the transition into becoming an entrepreneur,work-life balance was a number one priority for me.

Today, I try to start each day with intent. I try to be intentional about what want to achieve for the day and also try to get as much done before 12:00 p.m. I want to ensure that when my kids and husband get home from school or work that my time is dedicated to them. Now, am I able to achieve this every day? No, but I do try to achieve this more often than not.

Can you tell us about any habits you have/things you do, to have a successful day?
My husband works overnight in addition to us having 3 businesses (Mobile Detail, Barber Shop, and Creative Arts Service) In addition, I work closely with my sister who also took the leap and found the non-profit organization Lighthouse Solutions.

Hey, it’s a family affair.

Yes, it seems like a lot, but we are trying to build this foundation for our next generation. The plan that God has for us is much bigger than us so we have to put in the work. Since I have to get up early in the morning to get the kids ready for school and that’s something that I’m used too anyway, I try to leverage that time effectively. Once the kids are off on the bus, I’m getting my day started.

#1 Spiritual Alignment... I start with meditation and exercise. I use this time to be one with God. This is my growth and development moment.
#2 Business Management ...I have a project board in my kitchen. (One day I will have it in my office) I identify my objectives for the day and focus on how to continue to grow each of our businesses to the next level.
#3 Keep It Simple… Focus on quality not quantity. I try to make obtainable goals each day that I can achieve. There may be times that I may miss a goal, but it’s okay. I just move it to the next day just as long I get it done in an appropriate time and it is not affecting any of our customers.

How did you get where you are today, and who/what helped you along the way?
Please know that by no means would I consider myself perfect or super organized. I am a work in progress. I have to surround myself with mentors and good people who help keep me on the right path and hold me accountable.
What have you learned about leadership, entrepreneurship and mentoring others?
I learned that it all is a process and it takes work. At the end of the day, leadership starts with being a servant first. It’s having knowledge, wisdom and understanding as you go through process in order to pass it along to others.

How has starting your business and living your purpose balanced out to where you are now?
I have grown so much since this journey. Back in September, I did a little reflection because it had been a year since me taking the leap. Here’s what I shared with others on what I have gained.

1. Trust God - He has your back
2. Make time for family and loved ones
3. Self-employed is hard work & rewarding
4. Don't just Go but GROW in the moment
5. Know your happy place
6. I AM the CHAMPION of my sound! ❤

What do you find most helpful about a using social media in terms of marketing your business and growing it?
Social media helps tell the story. We utilize it as a platform to help build trust with our customers to showcase our quality work, but also allow them to share transparently their experience of our services provided.

What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?
We are able to build a foundation that my children’s children will be able to stand on.
What are you currently working on now?
Right now we are working to build a team and looking to expand into a building. In addition, with MY-T-BY-DESIGN “Imperfectly Painting with Purpose”continuing to grow, starting in January I will be attending John Brown University working on my Marriage & Family Counseling license in order to provide a higher level of service to my clients through private one on one art therapy sessions.

What pearls of wisdom can you give other women that are looking to reach their potential?
When you hear those whispers saying it’s time for a change or to do something that is out of the ordinary that is your inner soul speaking to you. Even though it may be scary and uncomfortable in the moment, just trust and believe the process because what is unordinary will soon manifest itself to be an extraordinary blessing bigger than you can image.
